Field observations (Boesch and Boesch 2000) found that female chimps engage in tool-use for acquiring plant-foods, such as nut-cracking, far more than males do. A 20:1 F:M ratio, actually. Really makes you wonder about early tool use in Homo and possibly (gasp!) Paranthropus.
